Building the Relationship

o Expectations from the relationship
o Concrete ways of building trust

Negotiating the Arrangement
o Your mentee’s tentative goals and objectives
o Logistics (where, when, and for how long you’ll meet)
o Confidentiality rules
o Role of the mentee’s manager
o How you’ll give each other feedback
o Ways you’ll measure the mentee’s progress and the quality of your mentoring relationship
o Additional contact information and communication ideas

Helping your mentee develop

o Goals and development activities
o What you agree to do at each step
o Resources
o People to whom you can refer or introduce the mentee
o Good questions to ask

Ending the formal relationship
o Specifically what you have observed in you mentee
o Concrete ways to convey your appreciation and observations
o Feedback from your mentee about how you could be a better mentor
o Future options for the relationship
o What contact (if any) to expect from each other after ending the formal relationship
o Completing all requirements of your mentoring program
