Working Together

  • consideration for choosing mentors and mentees

  • what help the potential mentee expects and needs
  • how often and for how long he/she would interact

Building the Relationship

  • meeting, phone and e-mail contact
  • expectations from the relationship
  • concrete ways of building trust

Negotiating the Arrangement

  • your mentee’s tentative goals and objectives
  • logistics (where, when, and for how long you will meet)
  • confidentiality rules
  • role of the mentee’s manager
  • how you will give each other feedback
  • ways you will measure the mentee’s progress and the quality of your mentoring relationship
  • additional contact information and communication ideas

Helping your Mentee Develop

  • goals and development activities
  • what you agree to do at each step
  • resources
  • people to whom you can refer or introduce the mentee
  • good questions to ask

Ending the Formal Relationship

  • specifically what you have observed in you mentee
  • concrete ways to convey your appreciation and observations
  • feedback from your mentee about how you could be a better mentor
  • future options for the relationship
  • what contact (if any) to expect from each other after ending the formal relationship
  • completing all requirements of your mentoring programs
