Your Professional Advantage: Strengths that Actually Matter

2 Min Read

In a recent workshop, we challenged people to identify their strengths through three future-focused lenses:

1: What energises you? (Not what you’re good at, but what gives you energy) – Examples: Connecting disparate ideas, debugging complex systems, sensing group dynamics, imagining alternatives
2: What do people seek you out for? (Your unconscious superpowers) – Examples: Calm in chaos, pattern spotting, asking challenging questions, translating between worlds
3: What feels easy to you but hard for others? (Your natural advantages) – Examples: Holding paradoxes, communicating with clarity, long-term thinking, building trust quickly.

It’s a worthwhile exercise that always gets the room buzzing.

Every wave of technological and economic disruption has raised the bar on what it means to be distinctly human at work.

Automation eliminated routine cognitive tasks. Globalisation eliminated geographical advantage. AI is now eliminating a significant portion of skilled knowledge work.

What remains — and what the market keeps repricing upward — is the capacity for nuanced judgement, genuine relationships, ethical responsibility, and creative synthesis.

The professionals who thrive across all of these facets aren’t the ones who learned the most skills. They’re the ones who developed a stable, curious, honest relationship with their own thinking — and kept showing up to do hard things well.

That’s not a competency. That’s strength to celebrate. And it was always the point.
